For those of you who aren’t familiar with the village of Portmeirion, you’d easily be mistaken into thinking we were getting married in a fantastico Italian village on the shores of Lake Garda. It’s hard to believe that this Italianate village is located in North Wales, only a two hour drive from Chester!
The village of Portmeirion was created by the Welsh architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis (1883-1978). His vision was to create an ‘ideal village’ that would enhance the naturally beauty of a location, not spoil it. Work commenced on building Portmeirion in 1925 but it wouldn’t be for another 47 years, in 1973, that the entire village would be completed.
I’m not a number, I’m a free man!
The Prisoner, a cult 1960’s TV series starring Patrick McGoohan was filmed on location at Portmeirion. McGoohan starred as the lead character, Number Six, a British intelligence agent who was abducted and imprisoned in the surreal costal village. The 17 episode series tells the story of Number Six’s attempts to escape and his captors pursuit to find out why he resigned from his job.
